The primary focus of the TVSLab research is to understand how visual function develops in children in events of normal and abnormal neurological development. In that context, the lab not only studies visual development per se but also its relationship with other critical neural domains, such as motor function and cognition. The lab's secondary research interest is related to the question of neuroplasticity. The research group is currently exploring ways to harness visual plasticity in adults with brain-based visual disorders. Overall, the translational vision science research program uses techniques such as perceptual learning (repetitive behavioral training), video games, non-invasive brain stimulation, and neuroimaging of the visual cortex. 


Dr. Chakraborty's collaborators are affiliated to well-respected institutions, including the University of Waterloo, Drexel University, Boston Children's Hospital (Harvard University), Stanford University, Marshall B. Ketchum University, Illinois College of Optometry, The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, University of British Columbia, and the University of Auckland.


With Chakraborty's prolific collaboration across the globe and his ability to work successfully within large multidisciplinary groups, his research aims to address questions within visual neuroscience relevant to basic science and clinical practice. The current lab research includes the following projects:

 

  1. Using non-invasive brain stimulation to harness neuroplasticity in adults with amblyopia (lazy eye)
  2. Using non-invasive brain stimulation to treat binocular vision disorder in children and adults
  3. Establishing the validity and reliability of different non-invasive magnetic and electrical brain stimulations
  4. Using repetitive sensory learning to aid visual recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury and cortical stroke
