RESEARCH INTERESTS

Vocal communication is important for humans and animals. Voice disorders affect an estimated 8% of Americans yearly and approximately a third of the population in their lifetime. We are interested in two questions, (a) how are respiratory and vocal movements integrated in order to generate a voice, and (b) how does phenotypic variation of the vocal apparatus contribute to acoustic variation. In my lab, students have the opportunity to learn neurophysiological techniques, macroscopic and microscopic imaging, sound analysis and biomechanical tests in order to explore how complex vocal behavior in vertebrates is generated and controlled, and how it evolved.
