RESEARCH INTERESTS

Despite many efforts to engineer a biocompatible surface in an attempt to improve outcomes during cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB), the examination of biomarkers released during platelet activation remains sparse. Specifically, research on coagulation during CPB using beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4 as main indicators of platelet activation has not been performed in great length. Many research studies have been conducted in the past to examine the efficacy of biocompatible surfaces in reducing the degree of the systemic inflammatory response by measuring platelet function and survival post-bypass surgery. This study will focus on the examination of different biocompatible surfaces and its efficacy in preserving platelet function by studying the release of beta-thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4.
