Vaibhav Tiwari, Ph.D.

Dr. Vaibhav Tiwari is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology whose research explores how cell-surface glycans shape viral infection, immunity, and disease. He earned his Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois Chicago. Using herpes simplex virus as a model, his laboratory investigates how glycan structure governs virus–host interactions and translates these discoveries into carbohydrate-based antiviral strategies, including heparan sulfate mimetics and marine-derived sulfated glycans. His work aims to prevent infection, limit inflammation, and preserve tissue integrity. Through teaching and mentorship, he cultivates curiosity, independent thinking, and the scientific imagination that drives discovery.
