RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Mahaffey's doctoral work utilized a participatory action research approach to explore ways to foster self-determination in community mental health setting. Dr. Mahaffey has also completed research considering the occupational needs of people transitioning from institutions to the community; disability, recovery and occupational identity and occupation and autistic Identity; disability. She is working with a colleague in Denmark to publish two additional studies looking at practitioner's views on including occupations not traditionally illuminated in our practice, research and scholarship. She is also partnering with a community mental health OT program to complete a pre and post intervention study to determine the effectiveness of person directed occupational therapy services. She is in year 2 of this study.
